United States Grand Prix FP2 session saw Lewis Hamilton assert himself as the dominant driver on the grid again as he lead from the front most of the way but it was Verstappen who had the quicker car on the soft compound in simulations. The Dutch driver cruised his Red Bull to a comfortable P3 with Leclerc pipping him for P2 at The United States Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver was on radio complaining for much of the session at one point saying as a response to his team alerting Charles of Hamilton’s lap pace:
“There’s no way I can get that”
The driver near the top of the charts who also showed a lot of promise was Vettel who had a comparable pace to the Mercedes but was a step harder compound. I imagine much of the reporting will be talking how his times lagged but they were on different programs. It appears Vettel took note of Hamilton’s Mexico Grand Prix performance so don’t be surprised if we see an over-cut from the 4x world champion.
Grosjean is gutted with a tough wreck at his home constructor’s home race after having such a promising FP1 session around the bumpy Circuit of the Americas. Less than a dozen minutes in and Romain destroyed the new Haas innovation they had launched for the weekend. He ended up being fine but borrowing his words, “the car is not”. The second Silver Arrow who needs to win to keep his chances alive, Valtteri Bottas, had a lackluster showing in FP2. Neither qualifying nor race pace simulation looked good for the Fin.
United States Grand Prix FP2 Hosts A Redemption Battle
Bottas only held his P5 due to Alex Albon having his two mega-quick laps being deleted. Turn 19 has been giving drivers a lot of trouble so don’t be surprised if we see more of the same when it counts in qualifying. Pierre Gasly, the previous Red Bull driver who swapped with Albon, continues his streak of solid practice sessions. The decision to demote him into a more comfortable situation suits Gasly’s driving style – atleast for now. He’ll want to continue this pace into tomorrow and qualifying. Speaking of former Red Bull drivers, Sainz answered all doubters, including myself, about his pace after putting together a couple good laps at the end good for P8.
Lance Stroll bests Sergio Perez yet again and positions himself for his first Q3 outside of Monza. But there’s still an hour and a half of racing before he can achieve that. Racing Point isn’t out of trouble yet as the Sergio Perez weigh bridge penalty will force him to start from the pitlane as he missed the stewards instructions when they called him in at the conclusion of the P2 session. Antionio Giovinazzi rounds out the final ten drivers in the points headed into FP3 and the electric qualy battle that is assuredly going to ensure.
