United States Grand Prix FP1 session was full of track limits issues, bumps and new tyre testing. But ultimately Verstappen left the victor leading the time sheets but being hunted down by his teammate Alex Albon. Ferrari’s were also close behind and the Mercedes were lost in 2020 compound testing.
After a very contentious Mexico grand prix for Verstappen, he did well to turn around and have a solid showing in FP1. Alex Albon found himself at yet another new track but ended in third split only by Vettel’s Ferrari. Beyond that, no stellar times were posted for the session. Cold circuit plus bumpy track meant drivers were just getting adjusted. Not to mention many of the drivers were participating in programs meant to test the new 2020 tyre compound. A slueth of midfield drivers came next before the likes of Leclerc & Hamilton found themselves on the time chart. Gasly finished the session P4 with Ricciardo in 5th and Grosjean in 6th – one place ahead of my initial qualifying prediction.
Hamilton ran a very heavy 2020 tyre compound program with a high majority on Pirelli’s new boots. Leclerc had issues with his throttle peddle which sidelined him for much of the action but was good for P7. Carlos Sainz was the victim of one of these bumps and went for twirl in his bright orange McLaren. He landed in P12 with his teammate Lando Norris having an even worse outing good for P18.
The hometown Haas boys both finish inside the 10 with Kevin Magnussen earning a P10. Nicholas Latifi drove for Williams in FP1 for George Russel but had technical issues as anti-stall kicked in less than 30 minutes after the session started. This is indicative of gear box problems so his session was all but over. His handful of laps were good for P20.
