Mexican Grand Prix FP3 Results Summary
The Mexican Grand Prix saw a wet start to the FP3 session making it difficult to get important lap times in. Ferrari continue to top the time sheets, the Silver Arrows doing their best to pursue, and Sainz’s McLaren edging showing surprising form edging into P5 ahead of an impeded Verstappen.
Max Verstappen set the fastest FP3 time with a 1:16.2 in last year’s Mexican Grand Prix but the wet conditions wouldn’t allow for this kind of pace at the 2019 visit to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. The racing line was compromised in the early part of the session with the apex of some of the most important turns being slick. This presented a very interesting dilemma where it wasn’t appropriate conditions for slicks and intermediates were torn apart. The circuit produces a very narrow racing line that wound up being dry but Ferrari found a way to squeeze pace out of it.
But this time Leclerc leads the Scuderia with Vettel a blink of an eye behind. The Ferrari straight line advantage was obvious today as Vettel goes 352 kph today in the speed trap compared to Valtteri’s Mercedes clocked at 348 kph. Vettel had a sensor issue for most of the session but both Ferrari’s were able to get back on the track. Leclerc was a full tenth up on his teammate in the last sector.
Mercedes continue to struggle to keep up but the good news if you are a Mercedes F1 fan is that they are seriously looking at leveraging the hard tyre for an early undercut starting on C4 softs thanks to the amount of data they were able to collect in the Mexico Grand Prix FP2 session. Considering how far off the pace they have been consistently, it might not be a crazy plan after all.
Verstappen was running quick as the track rubbered in but he was impeded by an Alfa Romeo which put him back at back at P6. Expect him to climb up during qualifying. Meanwhile his teammate Alex Albon got his chassis changed within curfew limits and was able to get right back on track for FP3 no problem. Christian Horner had this to say regarding the Red Bull rookie’s mindset coming into this session:

Ultimately, not a very lively session thanks to the track conditions and teams being weary of damage so close to qualifying. should make for an electric qualifying session at the Mexican Grand Prix.
