The most notable thing about this year’s tyre selections is the choice for Mercedes to load up a step heavier than every else. Hamilton is bringing more mediums (4) than every single driver on the grid and Valtteri brings a very conservative set matched only by the McLaren drivers. Worth noting, both the McLarens also did long stints and pushed their tyres in Austin, Texas last week. Without speculation, there seems to be a trend emerging where the teams pulling out strong results on long stints are really pushing Pirelli’s estimation of the tyre life. We saw Hamilton struggle but ultimately hold off Max Verstappen at the United States Grand Prix on a long tyre stint so the strategy is hard to argue if it’s worked in back to back weeks.

Racing Point, Haas, Renault, Red Bull, and Ferrari all brought along 10 red-tipped C3’s to Interlagos. Most teams think that 2 medium sets is going to be enough showing that the softer compound is going to be favored. This makes sense given also that there is roughly a 75% chance of safety car. The Brazilian Grand Prix over the years has proved to be an unpredictable one due to the tricky nature of the corners and elevation changes as well as the weather. McLaren, Gasly, Russell, Mercedes, and Giovinazzi are the only drivers bring along 3 medium yellow-tipped tyres.

It’ll be interesting to watch how Toro Rosso choose to use their tyre compound selection as they’ve brought alone a fairly hard combination as well.
