Abu Dhabi Grand Prix FP1 was lead by Valtteri on his fresh PU, followed closely by Verstappen & Vettel who found himself in the wall to end the session.
Despite turning around and leading the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix FP2 session as well, Valtteri’s leading first session time should be taken with a grain of salt in that Bottas has received a brand new PU with zero miles thanks to his Brazil GP retirement. Still impressive he led Max Verstappen, who finished, P2, by over half a second on medium tyres, though. Hamilton rounded out the FP1 podium but was forced to bring in his W10 easy and limp home to the garage to fix a sensor error.
Sebastian Vettel found himself P5 on the time sheet and ended the session in dramatic fashion by red flagging the session with just a couple minutes to go after throwing his Ferrari into the turn 19 wall. Sebastian just made a simple mistake getting on the throttle while taking the kerb – one many of the drivers are taking – just seems his wheels were not in sync with his timing on this occasion. A rare error for 2012 Vettel – not so much for 2019 Sebastian Vettel unfortunately. While Sebastian was okay and the car looks like a simple fix ahead of FP2 for the crew, it’s an especially difficult error following the fall out of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Ricciardo sees his Renault engine die on him and splashing up oil all over Pierre Gasly in the process. The Renault F1 team have confirmed that Ricciardo will be fine in terms of his power and will not need to follow in Bottas’s footsteps with fresh PU parts in exchange for a grid penalty.
