Miami Grand Prix Vote to get a second Formula 1 stop in the US took one giant leap backwards in the long anticipated Miami-Dade City Hall meeting late Tuesday public meeting of the board of county commissioners. A follow-up hearing December 10th has been scheduled where the fate lies with that committee to achieve the green light for 2021.
Miami Grand Prix Vote Reveals Political Hurdles
Betty T. Ferguson, Former County Commissioner
It’s Formula 1 racing in a bedroom community. The majority of residents in Miami Gardens do not want to see F1 racing at Hard Rock Stadium; the Miami Gardens city council voted to oppose Formula 1.
We have seen too often deep pockets paint rosy pictures and have their way, only to the embarrassment of the county at a later date. Don’t allow F1 promoters to come in and roll over us over, like we’re not even humans.
They can produce all kinds of phony statements about how they can mitigate the deadly effects, but we can never erase deadly health damage, and possibly permanent hearing loss, especially to children. Even the county’s own study verifies the deadly effects.
“We are zoned for motor vehicle racing because a couple of years ago we resolved a lawsuit with the county commission and the city council, there were public hearings and public votes and the resolution of those three years of discussions. And you voted to allow motor vehicle racing at the stadium district as a matter of right. Three years later, we’re rehashing that conversation.”
Others who were in attendance lobbying for Formula 1 were the following:
- Formula 1’s Sean Bratches
- 2x F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi
- Miami-Dade’s Mayor Carlos Gimenez
So even with the positive support and advocates, the meeting did not go as swimmingly as many thought it would or F1 hoped – but it certainly went about as well as we thought talks about the Miami Grand Prix Vote would go. Next steps are to convene a public hearing. The Infrastructure & Capital Improvements Committee now holds the reigns on December 10th to discuss the Miami Grand Prix and whether it should continue on course for 2021 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
