Japanese Grand Prix FP2 Results Summary
The silver arrows continue their dominance and the double they so easily took in the FP1 session was followed up with yet another Valtteri Bottas lead run by Mercedes.
With Typhoon Hagibis threatening the race weekend, it could be that this is the how the grid will start should the qualifying session not be able to run. The paddock has taken extra precaution to make sure the Typhoon Hygibis doesn’t damage any of their equipment. Don’t miss any of the Japanese Grand Prix News, Results, or Updates.
Max Verstappen did well to separate the Ferrari from the Mercedes and wedged himself on the inside of the Ferraris of Vettel & Leclerc. Two Scuderia drivers looking rather contentious around the Suzuka track following eachother too close for comfort on some occasions. There were a few instances of drivers almost touching including Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen. The impending storm and the desire for the drivers to get their laps in created for an environment where you had to stick your elbows out. It made for one of the more entertaining FP2 sessions we’ve had so far. Alex Albon is really going to want to close up the gap to Max but for his first drive, he’s done really well at this tricky circuit.
To make matters even more interesting, Guenther Steiner lost 7,500 euros over his radio comments from the Russian Grand Prix. He returned to his paddock chair I’m sure a bit relieved as it was believed initially the FIA would rule much more firmly against him and rather ominously “summoned” him between sessions which is unusual.
Of the midfield, Carlos Sainz is looking even more impressive at the Suzuka circuit. The racing point pilots in Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll also have had a good showing thus far at the Japanese Grand Prix. The drivers who have been most surprising in the other direction have been the Renault’s. You would have thought this could be a circuit where their speed would start to show.
