Formula 1 standings for the 2020 season don’t exactly paint the most promising picture for Valttieri Bottas if he intends on mounting a magical comeback.
And when I say magical, I mean it literally. It would take a pretty powerful spell to get the Finn back into contention. But, there are ways he can survive and advance through the Turkish Grand Prix.
There are exactly 6 of these scenarios that allow Valtteri Bottas to keep his Formula 1 Championship title hopes alive. And in all of them, he must never slip under P6. But Valtteri will need to do more than P6 – he’ll have to be near perfect give Hamilton’s performance in 2020.
Below is an interactive graphic of Valtteri’s chances and how he can keep the title in sight beyond The 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. Scroll down using the arrow to view all scenarios.
Valtteri’s Odds
They aren’t pretty.
Of the 13 races the Finn has competed in, he’s won two of them. He’s also failed to finish another due to reliability. That leaves 10 classified events. 50% of those he failed to take the second best position available to him. Many people talk about the 2020 season and Hamilton’s dominance due to the car. But just look at Valtteri’s results to debunk that. If the car was SO good, why he spending so much time NOT in P2?
The point is, Valtteri will need to flat out beat Lewis at every race and also hope the 6th world champ magically loses the ability to drive his car. Outside of this, it’s not a matter of if Lewis will be crowned a record tying 7x champion, but when. I’m not totally convinced it’ll happen in Turkey. Hamilton’s record at Instanbul Park isn’t as impressive as other circuits with his lone win in 2011. His results are as follows at the Hermann Tilke designed circuit:
2007:P5

2008:P2

2009:P13

2010:P1

2011:P4

It must be said though these are at the wheel of a McLaren that was full of gremlins. Regardless, it has net him a 40% podium rate all the same. Regardless, his crowning is inevitable. But with all the talks of his contract, he may only have one more year left. but a win will cement him as the most decorated grand prix racer in F1 as it relates to championship titles.
What a way to go out, should that be the case.
