The 2020 Russian Grand Prix was drama-filled event stolen by Valtteri Bottas with Max Verstappen capitalizing on a rare lapse from the reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton who was good enough for P3.
In a weekend where the 6x champion typically makes the most of every headline, his teammate shunned him the chance to match Schumacher’s record of 91 wins with a little help from a pit mistake. Two, in fact. He was penalized for two practice starts that breached Article 19.2 of the Race Director’s Event Notes. This double breach cost him double the time for a total of 10 stationary seconds he’d never recover from. It was accompanied by two points added to his license. Notably, this brings his tally to 10 – just 2 shy of a race ban.
After 10 rounds, Bottas cuts the gap to #44 to 44 points as Verstappen inches further up making sure to keep both Silver Arrows honest. The midfield was as electric as predicted and then some as lap contact with Leclerc and Stroll took the Canadian out of the fight leaving his teammate in Pink to run free and clear to a P4. Ricciardo would do his damndest to slow him down though as the two had a beautiful exchange that favored Checo after a gorgeous switch back move.
And while Racing Point struggled along with Ferrari who only saw 50% points finishers for their respective outlets, AlphaTauri as well as Renault would get a double points score as Ocon would keep his Saturday form on display for the race finishing P7 cut off from his teammate by Leclerc who drove a strong race to recover from his incident (albeit gifted with a no penalty decision given his understeer into Stroll).
Giovinnazi continues to quietly impress with another driver today that went mostly unnoticed by many; including the time sheets as Alfa Romeo brought in no points as a constructor but Antonio was separated from his distinguished teammate by two Ferrari powered cars in Kevin Magnussen (P12) and Vettel (P13) as Kimi Raikkonen failed to deliver on race trim for a P14 finish.

Formula 1 Outlook: Post Round 10 In Sochi
If anything, the win for Bottas was psychological as now the grid has to endure a 2 week break session before going to the Nürburgring which many drivers on the grid haven’t put rubber to pavement in an F1 car. Vettel was the man to beat in the alternative universe where we raced there last – he was admittedly a different man in a different car. But experience will be critical. Albon has this break time to really look at the data as to why his teammate is doubling him while Checo can keep securing his future; a crazy thought to even say out-loud given how strong of a performer he’s been habitually for Racing Point without fail.
